How Contractors Can Get More Jobs From Their google Business Profile

Why You Shouldn't Fake Multiple Google Business Locations
(And What Actually Works Instead)

If you're a contractor, you've probably seen it: a competitor with one shop somehow showing up in the map pack in five different cities. And maybe you've had an agency pitch you on "map pack domination" — setting up Google Business Profiles in every city you want to work in.

I want to be straight with you about how that trick works, why it's a bad idea, and what to do instead — because the honest version actually gets you better results without the risk.

How the fake listing game works

The setup is simple: an agency creates Google Business Profile listings for you using virtual office addresses, coworking spaces, UPS Store mailboxes, or somebody's cousin's house in the city you want to rank in. On paper, you now "have a location" in Pasadena, Burbank, and Glendale.

Nobody works at those addresses. No customer will ever walk through those doors. But for a while, you show up on the map in all of them.

Why it blows up

Google's rules are clear: a Business Profile has to represent a real, staffed location where you actually meet customers — or a properly set up service-area business (more on that in a second). Virtual offices and mailbox addresses aren't allowed, full stop.

And Google enforces this more aggressively every year. Video verification is now standard for a lot of new and edited listings, meaning you have to show the actual workspace, signage, and tools on camera. Competitors can report fake listings, and they do.

Here's the part that should really give you pause: when a fake listing gets caught, Google often doesn't just remove that one listing. It can suspend your entire profile — including the real one that's been collecting your reviews and driving your calls for years. Imagine losing your Google presence in the middle of your busy season because of a shortcut an agency talked you into. I've seen it happen, and getting a suspended profile reinstated is slow, painful, and not guaranteed.

It's also just not how you want to win. The homeowner calling you from the next town over thinks they're calling a local company. Starting the relationship with a small lie isn't the move.

The good news: you don't need fake listings to show up in more cities

Most contractors are what Google calls a service-area business — you go to the customer, the customer doesn't come to you. Google has a whole system built for exactly your situation, and most contractors barely use it. Here's what actually works:

1. Set your service area correctly. Your single Google Business Profile can list the cities and zip codes you serve. Done right, this alone expands where you can appear.

2. Build real city pages on your website. Not copy-paste pages with the city name swapped out — actual pages with local project photos, neighborhoods you work in, and reviews from customers in that city. Google rewards this, and so do homeowners.

3. Stack up reviews that mention your service cities. When a customer in Torrance says "they replaced our water heater in Torrance," that review does double duty. A steady stream of detailed, city-specific reviews is one of the strongest local ranking signals there is.

4. Use Local Services Ads and Google Ads for guaranteed coverage. LSAs let you show up at the very top of search across your entire service radius — no listing games required. You only pay for real leads, and the Google Guaranteed badge builds trust before the phone even rings.

None of this can get your profile suspended. All of it compounds over time. And your competitors running fake listings are one verification sweep away from disappearing while you keep climbing.

What you can expect when you do it right

Every market is different, so I won't promise you a magic number. But here's what typically happens for contractors who commit to this approach over a few months:

  • More map pack appearances across your real service area — without risking your main profile

  • A review profile that grows every month instead of in random bursts

  • Higher answer rates and more booked jobs from the leads you're already getting

  • A Google presence that gets stronger every year instead of one that could vanish overnight

Limited-time offer: AI-powered review generation, set up for you
